If god loves us all, why does he let bad things happen to good people?

A friend of mine from HS was brutally murdered earlier this month by her ex boyfriend. That prick is still alive but she no longer breathes breath into her body. To say the least, she didn't deserve it. My question can also apply to the little boys who got molested by catholic priests, the sweet little old lady that got hit by a drunk while crossing the street, children that get cancer before they hit puberty, and anyone else without a fair shot. I don't think there's any divine reason for these things, it would be crazy for me to think that this kind pain would be administered for any purpose. I DO THINK THAT WE LEARN LESSONS FROM THESE THINGS. Why do good people meet these gruesome ends when this heavenly father is looking out for our best intrests? It just doesn't make any sense to me. Please spare me the long cut and paste sermons. I just want a plain english answer without any "everything happens for a reason", "god knows all" answers.
