For what reason was a flood chosen to wipe out mankind, excluding Noah and his family?

Out of the limitless bag of tricks from which a deity's power stem, surely he could have come up with a faster, more efficient method of extermination. You'd think an almighty being would be able to quickly and thoroughly banish the evil-doers in fewer than 40 days. Am I the only one who sees the simplicity of the "Great Flood" story as a lack of imagination on God's behalf?
