Does a 20 guage shotgun kick more or less that a standard 30-30 round?

I know this sounds like Im a pansy, but when I was really young (8 or 9) i shot my first shotgun and it kicked really hard. so i guess ever since then ive been afraid of the recoil. Normally at my dads house i always shoot 20 guage shoutgun. I dont think it hurts that much, but he wanted me to try a 30-30. I dont know if it kicks hard cause it is a high powered rifle right?
